About Sharon Casapulla

About Me

I’ve lived in Athens County, Ohio, for the past 25 years, spending as much time as possible outdoors. I am completing a certificate in botanical illustration from the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh and am taking classes with botanical artist Ann Swan. I use colored pencil, graphite, and pen & ink, to capture the delicate beauty of plants and landscapes, reflecting the diversity of life I encounter in nature.

I have worked as an educator most of my professional life, in various settings, including wilderness education in California and New Jersey. I have taught middle and high school science. Most recently, I have worked at Ohio University in the medical school. I have recently been contracted to illustrate a book on southern flying squirrels.

My love for art and science are never far from my mind. I have learned to see in a different, deeper way when I study a plant with the intention of representing it on paper. I love the feeling of wonder and awe when I get lost in all of the amazing colors and details I see in the things I draw.

Appalachia is home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals, but much of it is fragile and threatened. It is my hope that my illustrations spark a sense of appreciation and wonder, motivating others to protect the beauty of our community for future generations.
